Christmas tree types at Bengtson Christmas Tree Farm:

-Black Hill Spruce has a stiff branch that is great for holding heavy ornaments.
-Needles are stiff but not sharp unlike the Colorado Spruce.
-Dense and conical in shape.
-Darker than the White Hill Spruce, needles are bright green to bluish green and are 1/3 - 3/4 inches in length. There are many layers of the stiff needles.

Canaan (pronounced "Ka-naan) Fir looks similar to Fraser and Balsam Firs. They are very full dense trees with a pyramidal shape with a spire-like tip. Needles are softer and shorter than other varieties. Needle color varies from dark green to bluish green with silver underneath.eath.

Colorado Spruce (or Blue Spruce) have a narrow, pyramidal, symmetrical shape with a cone shaped crown. Branches are very strong. Needles vary from bluish green to bluish grey, are 1 - 1 1/2 inches in length and are VERY stiff and sharp (gloves are recommended when handling or decorating). Good needle retention.

Douglas Firs have been one of the most popular varieties used for Christmas trees since the 1920's. They are not related to true firs. Needles are soft, shiny and green, are 1 to 1.5 inches long and have are fragrant when crushed. Branches are spreading and drooping

Fraser Firs are very similar to Canaans and Balsams. Tree have a pyramidal shape. Needles are soft, silvery green and about 1 inch long. Excellent needle retention(especially when watered correctly in your home!)  Space between strong branches leaves room for ornaments. Branches turn slightly upward.

Scotch Pine are pyramidal when young(the age your Christmas Tree). They then grow to be very rounded and open trees at maturity. Branches are stiff and will hold heavy ornaments. Needles are dark green to bright green in color, can be 1-3 inches in length and are VERY sharp(gloves are recommended), Tree has excellent needle retention even when dry.

White Pine is the largest pine in the United States. They are full and bushy. Needles are soft, flexible(not good for heavy ornaments), are green to bluish green in color and vary from 2 1/2 - 5 inches long. Good needle retention. Little aroma (good news for people with allergies).

White Spruce have a good natural shape with a cone shaped crown. Needles are bluish green to green and are short and stiff (1/2 - 3/4 inches long) with a blunt tip, so they are very good for holding ornaments. Needle retention is very good(especially with proper water in your home!), much better than other spruces.
